The Śāstra says: "Furthermore, external name-and-form should rely on consciousness and have consciousness as condition." This points out the faults regarding the second and third [sūtras]. If, because the sūtra makes no qualification, all consciousness must rely on name-and-form, that refutes the second fault. External name-and-form having consciousness as condition is the third sūtra. Since in both cases the sūtra makes no qualification, all name-and-form should rely on consciousness and be conditioned by material form; that would mean external material form and the four characteristics and so forth should rely on consciousness and be conditioned by consciousness, which is a fault.
