The Śāstra states: "If because of sovereign efficacy ... because of their sovereign function," the author of the treatise provisionally sets up host and guest to resolve the objection. Herein there are two parts: first, positing the objection; second, properly resolving the objection. Within the objection, it first presents the objection from its own school, and next presents the objection from the Sāṃkhya. This is the first, presenting the objection from its own school. The Nyāyānusāra states: "If things are established as faculties because of sovereign efficacy, then among the defilements in the category of craving and views, the two dharmas of feeling and perception have a sovereign function; perception, like feeling, should also be established as a faculty. Furthermore, the defilements have a sovereign function in being able to destroy wholesome factors and the like, so they should constitute the entity of a faculty. Furthermore, since faculties are established because of being supreme, and among all dharmas nirvāṇa is the most supreme, for what reason is nirvāṇa not established as a faculty?"
