"Contrary to this are called unwholesome": reversing these four wholesome ones, four unwholesome ones are established. Unwholesome in the ultimate sense refers to the phenomena of saṃsāra, because the phenomena of saṃsāra have suffering as their intrinsic nature and are extremely untranquil, like a chronic disease. Unwholesome by intrinsic nature refers to shamelessness (āhrīkya), lack of modesty (anapatrāpya), and the three unwholesome roots such as greed and hatred; their nature is unwholesome, like poison. Unwholesome by association: excluding shamelessness, lack of modesty, and so on, other minds and mental factors must be associated with shamelessness, lack of modesty, and so forth, before being called unwholesome, like water mixed with poison. Unwholesome by origination refers to bodily and vocal karma, and the four characteristics and acquisition among the unassociated formations; because they are originated by what is unwholesome by intrinsic nature and by association, they are like milk produced from the juice of poisonous medicine.
