'In the formless and the heaven of non-conception, / The first seven are only possessed' means that when a noble one is born in the formless realm, they possess the past and future untainted seven factors of restraint; because that [realm] is formless, they definitely do not manifest. In the heaven of non-conception, because of being without mind, they also do not manifest; they only possess the past and future restraint of meditative concentration. However, when a formless non-returner (anāgāmin), in past bodily existences of the five stages of the desire and form realms, depending on whichever stage—whether two, three, four, or five stages—had previously aroused and previously ceased untainted restraint, is born into the formless realm, they possess the past precepts of one stage previously aroused, up to possessing the past precepts of five stages previously aroused. As for the future, the untainted restraints based on the bodily existences of the five stages are all definitely possessed (the five stages: the desire realm and the four dhyānas).
