'Among them, excluding two views, the remaining nine can have higher objects' explains the nine defilements that take higher objects. Among the eleven, excluding the view of individuality and extreme views, the remaining nine anuśayas can take the higher realms and higher stages as objects, and are called the nine defilements with higher objects. Because one does not grasp a higher realm as self or belonging to self, the view of individuality does not take what is higher as object. Because extreme views necessarily arise in dependence on the view of individuality, extreme views also do not take what is higher as object. Taking higher realms as objects means that in the two higher realms, they take either one individually or both together as object. Taking higher stages as objects means that in the eight higher stages, they take each one individually, or two together, up to all eight stages together as object.
