Explanation: Among the secondary afflictions, jealousy, regret, anger, enmity, cruelty, and resentment—these six are associated only with the feeling of mental pain, because they operate with a distressed disposition and exist only in the mental sphere. Avarice is associated with the feeling of joy, meaning that it operates with a cheerful disposition and exists only in the mental sphere. Dissimulation, deceit, sleep, and concealment—these four are associated with both mental pain and joy, because they operate with both cheerful and distressed dispositions and exist only in the mental sphere. Arrogance is associated with joy and pleasure: below the second dhyāna it is associated with the feeling of joy, and in the third dhyāna arrogance is associated with the feeling of pleasure, because it operates with a cheerful disposition and exists only in the mental sphere. When the verse says 'all [are associated with] equanimity', this means that speaking in terms of common association, all the above secondary afflictions are associated with the feeling of equanimity, because when their continuities are severed, one must abide in equanimity.
