[Regarding] "An arhat, eight, nine, all": "arhat" refers to the aśaikṣa; the word "remaining" from the preceding line flows into this, meaning that in terms of the remaining paths, an arhat [cultivates] eight, nine, or all. That is, in the stage of aśaikṣa, when the five [lineages] of fallible dharma and so forth cultivate the training of faculties, in the paths of liberation of the first eight grades one cultivates eight in the future, namely the knowledges of the four truths, dharma-knowledge, category-knowledge, knowledge of others' minds, and knowledge of exhaustion. For the four [lineages] of fallible dharma and so forth, in the ninth path of liberation one cultivates nine in the future, adding conventional knowledge to the previous eight. For the fifth, the immovable lineage, in the ninth path of liberation one cultivates ten in the future. Moreover, in the various preparatory paths of training the faculties of an aśaikṣa, one cultivates nine in the future, excluding the knowledge of non-arising. In the distinguished paths, those who have dull faculties cultivate nine in the future, whereas those who have sharp faculties cultivate ten in the future.
