[Regarding] "In order to be free from, obtaining, or giving rise to this, one cultivates the uncontaminated of this and lower [stages]": this explains cultivating the uncontaminated. There are three classes of cultivating the uncontaminated path: first, "in order to be free from this" means in order to be free from this stage; second, "obtaining this" means obtaining this stage; third, "giving rise to this" means these various paths arising in this stage. All three classes above cultivate the uncontaminated of this stage and the uncontaminated of lower stages in the future. Because uncontaminated paths are not subsumed under bound stages, one is able to cultivate them collaterally. The treatise says: "The words 'in order to be free from this' apply to two and four paths (the two are the contaminated and uncontaminated; the four are the preparatory, uninterrupted, liberation, and distinguished paths)."
