In the second, "conventional knowledge flanking the three category knowledges and the like," "and the like" includes the associated mind and mental factors. Namely, upon entering the path of vision (darśana-mārga), when arriving alongside the category knowledges of suffering, origin, and cessation, one can cultivate future conventional knowledge, giving rise to acquisition prior to the dharma to acquire it. The "cultivation" spoken of here is cultivation by acquisition: because the path of vision is uncontaminated while conventional knowledge is contaminated, conventional knowledge does not arise during the path of vision; because superior conditions are deficient, one acquires non-analytical cessation (the explanation states: superior condition refers to the bodily support of conventional knowledge; during the path of vision, there is only the bodily support of the path of vision and no bodily support of conventional knowledge, hence superior conditions are deficient). Since conventional knowledge ultimately never arises, it lacks acquisition simultaneous with or subsequent to the dharma. Question: "Why does one cultivate conventional knowledge flanking the three category knowledges, but not at the category knowledge of the path?" Answer: "It is cultivated for two reasons: First, because there is active comprehension of factual matters: since beginningless time, conventional knowledge has known suffering, abandoned origin, and realized cessation; now the three category knowledges also know suffering, abandon origin, and realize cessation, sharing the identical factual matter with conventional knowledge, hence they can cultivate conventional knowledge, etc. Second, because the factual matters of the corresponding truths are completed: regarding the three truths, suffering can be completely known, origin can be completely abandoned, and cessation can be completely realized; the factual matters of the corresponding truths being completed, conventional knowledge is cultivated concurrently. As for not cultivating conventional knowledge at the category knowledge of the path: first, conventional knowledge never had active comprehension of factual matters regarding the path; second, there is no active comprehension of all factual matters, for there is never any complete knowledge or complete cultivation possible regarding the path, due to the multiplicity of spiritual dispositions." Question: "Why is the word 'flanking' used for the three truths, but not for the truth of the path?" Answer: "Because one can know all suffering, abandon all origin, and realize all cessation, but none can cultivate the entire path. Even the Buddha does not exhaust cultivation by acquisition and cultivation by habituation regarding the path; therefore, the word 'flanking' is not used."
