Third, as for the increase of merit, it is merely the seeds perfumed by the active wholesome intention of giving, nominally designated as avijñapti, which is called the increase of merit. Therefore the śāstra states: "The perfuming by the intention directed at the previous giving continues subtly, gradually transforms, and arises with distinction. Because of this, it can induce many fruits in the future; hence it is stated with intentional meaning that in constant succession, meritorious karma gradually increases and meritorious karma continually arises. (Explanation: 1. perfuming, 2. subtly, 3. succession, 4. transformation, 5. distinction—these five are all alternative names for seeds)."
