3.62

'Along with female, male, grief, and suffering' clarifies what is bound to the form realm: within the form realm, besides the last three faculties excluded as before, there are additionally excluded the four faculties of female, male, grief, and suffering. The remaining fifteen faculties are bound to the form realm. Female and male are excluded because [beings there] are free from sexual desire; moreover, the female and male faculties make the body unsightly. Where the sūtras say that the form realm is called male, this is because of having the male appearance, not that they possess the [sexual] faculty. Suffering is absent because the body is pure and exquisite (it is not a basis for suffering); moreover, there are no unvirtuous occurrences there (it is not an object of suffering). Grief is absent because their mental continuum is moistened by śamatha (the continuum here means the body, which is not a basis for grief); moreover, there are no distressing or harmful occurrences there (it is not an object of grief).
