"Defiled arises from ten and produces four": 'defiled' refers to the two defilements, unwholesome and veiled. These two defiled minds arise from ten minds and can give rise to four minds.

Arising from ten: among the twelve, excluding trainee and non-trainee, they are four of its own realm, three minds of the form realm, and three minds of the formless realm. From any of these ten minds, one may die and give rise to a defiled mind of the desire realm. Thus the treatise states: "At the stage of rebirth-linking, all minds of the three realms may immediately give rise to a defiled mind of the desire realm."

Can give rise to four minds: this refers to the four of its own realm; there is no principle by which it can give rise to the rest. That is, a defiled mind of the desire realm does not give rise to higher absorptions nor does one proceed to those realms; hence there is no principle by which it can give rise to [minds of other] realms.
