From "Due to craving there are the four graspings" downward is the ninth, the branch of grasping (upādāna). Because it assists karma in grasping the fruit, it is named "grasping". Question: What is the difference between craving and grasping? Answer: The Vibhāṣā states: "When first arisen, it is named craving; when craving increases and develops, it is named the branch of grasping." It also states: "Feeling is the cause, and craving is the fruit. When craving is the cause, it in turn has grasping as its fruit. This is merely one branch that is divided into two." Proponents of the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra say: "The anusaya of greed is craving, while the remaining nine anuśayas are named grasping." The "four graspings" mentioned in this text have already been explained in the "Chapter on the Five Skandhas". The Vibhāṣā states: "What is named grasping? Because one is greedy for sensory objects, one seeks them in the four directions; therefore it is named grasping." This precisely takes seeking in the four directions as the meaning of the four graspings.
