The Abhidharmakośa, fascicle seventeen, says: In the present life, can one resume goodness or not? There are also those who can resume it, except for people who have committed the uninterrupted acts. Such people definitely [resume it] when on the verge of perishing from hell; the words 'when on the verge of perishing' mean when they are about to die; or right there, when they are about to receive rebirth. 'When they are about to receive rebirth' means at the position of the intermediate state; seeing the signs of the future fruit, they then resume the roots of goodness. It also says: severing roots of goodness by the power of conditions is resumed when born into hell, because the force of severing is weak; severing roots of goodness by the power of the cause is resumed when dying in hell, because the power of the cause is strong. Furthermore, [when severed with] corrupted intention but not corrupted exertion, the person who severs roots of goodness can resume them in the present life. If severed with both corrupted, only after the body perishes will one resume the roots of goodness. With respect to whether views are corrupted or uncorrupted, the meaning is also like this.
