Eighth, in [the section on] the marks of abandoning [the body from] above or below, 'abandoning only at the region of the heart' means that although cold touch gradually arises beforehand from above or below, when it reaches the region of the heart, it is not yet intensely painful or cold; at that very moment, when the final consciousness abandons the region of the heart, great cold touch again arises from the region of the heart and pervades the entire basis. Now, relying on this text, whether gradually abandoning from above or below, all reach the heart. It has traditionally been transmitted from of old that if one plants good [roots], it gradually grows cold up to the head and face, and one then dies; if one creates evil karma to be born among ghosts, it gradually grows cold from the head down to the belly, and one then dies; if born as an animal, down to the knees, and one then dies; if born in hell, down to the feet, and one then dies. None of these has textual proof. Furthermore, the old commentary by Vasubandhu states: 'If one creates good karma, the cold touch that arises definitely moves upward; if one creates evil karma, the cold touch that arises definitely moves downward.' People then mistakenly say: 'If born in a good destiny, it gradually grows cold from the feet up to the head, and only then does one die; if born in an evil destiny, it gradually grows cold from the head down to the feet, and only then does one die.' This is because they have not seen this treatise and thus believe in their own human sentiments. In truth, when the ālayavijñāna first takes rebirth, the initial place it lodges is called the physical heart; when the consciousness abandons the physical heart, that is called death. Therefore, the end of this fascicle states: 'Furthermore, the initial place where the consciousness of the kalala lodges is called the physical heart; as the consciousness first lodges in this place, it is precisely from this place that it is abandoned last.'
