Fifteenth, its presence or absence in the three realms: it is excluded from the formless realm because there is no form or place there. Master Ji explains: Even in the desire and form realms, it is not necessarily present, because when a human transforms into a tiger, or a sparrow transforms into a clam, and so forth, there is no intermediate existence. The *Nirvāṇa Sūtra* says: 'Some say that the desire and form realms have an intermediate existence; some say that the desire realm has no intermediate existence; both do not understand my meaning.' If all had it, why say that some do? Because they do not understand my meaning, it is accepted that it may be absent in both. Those who take time have it, while those who are swift do not, such as those whose bodies sink into hell—all such have none.
