"Designation contact": because the contact associated with the sixth [consciousness] can give rise to speech and can take speech as an object, it increases regarding both bases of sound and phenomena; being augmented by contact, it is called designation contact. "Contact with resistance" is the contact associated with the five consciousnesses, because their faculties have resistance. "Based on indulgence" refers to the desire realm; "renunciation" refers to the form, formless, and taintless realms; "savoring" refers to the tainted, and "without savoring" refers to the taintless. Another explanation says: indulgence clings to external objects; savoring clings to the internal body. "Mundane" refers to conceptualization; "supramundane" refers to non-conceptualization. The nine abodes add the fourth dhyāna and neither-perception to the seven stations of consciousness.
