Within these, according to Master Jing's analysis of the text, the first eight chapters distinguish the cultivation of practices that benefit oneself and others; the one Chapter on Dharmas Conducive to Awakening distinguishes the practice of internal realization; the final one Chapter on Merits concerns the virtues perfected through realization via the former two practices. Among the first eight chapters, the first six distinguish the practice of benefiting oneself; the one Chapter on the Four Articles of Attraction distinguishes the practice of benefiting others; the eighth, the Chapter on Offerings, Associating With Good Friends, and Cultivating the Immeasurables, jointly clarifies both practices. Although there is this explanation, for now we follow the division of Ji and others: the first seven chapters are their own section (svabhāga), not clarifying temporal repetition but merely practices of their own section; next there are two chapters clarifying superior progress; the final chapter concerns the perfection where causes yield fruits. Within their own section, the division by chapters is twofold, while the doctrinal analysis is threefold. The chapter division into two means: first there are six chapters clarifying practices of benefiting oneself, and the one Chapter on the Four Articles of Attraction clarifies practices of benefiting others. The doctrinal division into three means: two divisions are as above, and at the end of the Chapter on the Four Articles of Attraction, from "In this way has been taught the manifold giving, morality... down to co-operation" downward, it jointly concludes the activities of the two benefits, displaying the benefits perfected through cultivation. The six chapters on benefiting oneself are called the six perfections. The Chapter on Giving is established first, hence it is called the Chapter on Giving.
