In the former, regarding the statement that if bodhisattvas have a pure intention in the giving they practice, up to not abandoning a currently manifest benefit to sentient beings to give away a bodily part: here, the bodhisattva's intention has been pure from the outset, not [arising from a selfish desire of] not abandoning their own body; and in the present there is an undertaking that benefits sentient beings. Even if someone comes begging for a bodily part of the living bodhisattva, it should not be given. Because the present benefit is greater, while the benefit of relinquishing [the body part] is smaller, [this principle] applies generally to undertakings that bring many benefits. If their mind backslides and the thought arises in them, 'This ought to be shared, but [I have] an unsharing mind,' generating stinginess and cherishing their own body, then in order to shatter that stinginess they must relinquish the bodily part. But if their mind was already pure from the outset and their not relinquishing their own body is because the present and subsequent benefits are greater, they should not give away a bodily part. This is the meaning here.
