Where the treatise explains what should and should not be given, saying: "If […] bodhisattvas have pure aspiration regarding the giving they practice […] up to: they should not abandon an affair of benefiting sentient beings that is directly present, and give their bodily limbs": here it means that the bodhisattva previously had pure aspiration and was not begrudging of his own body; if there is an affair of benefiting sentient beings in the present, even if someone comes seeking the bodhisattva's limbs, he should not give them, because the present benefit is great, while the benefit at the time of relinquishing would be small; he acts in accordance with affairs of greater benefit. If his mind should regress, and he personally gives rise to the thought, "This should be given, but I do not give it," and a mind of stinginess arises because he cherishes his own body, then in order to destroy stinginess, he must relinquish his bodily limbs. If previously his mind was already pure, he was not begrudging of his own body, and in the present the affairs of benefit are moreover great, he should not give his bodily limbs; this is the meaning here.
