Third, regarding the passage below, 'towards the trainings': according to Jing, it clarifies seven goods. Now, following Ce, it clarifies nine goods: first, correct mindfulness; second, correct awareness; third, correct practice; fourth, guarding and closely protecting the sense doors; fifth, knowing moderation in food; sixth, constantly practicing wakefulness during the first and last watches of the night; seventh, associating with virtuous friends and relying on good factors; eighth, upholding and not transgressing; ninth, being able to repent having transgressed. These nine good dharmas are all as explained in the provisions for the path in the Śrāvakabhūmi, 'stage of renunciation'. Here, 'correct mindfulness' corresponds to the fifth provision there, which is precisely the substance of the faculty restraint that can protect; 'correct awareness' corresponds to the eighth provision there; 'correct practice' corresponds to the fourth provision, 'abiding fully in the precepts', etc.; as for 'guarding and closely protecting the sense doors', the mind's faculty restraint is what protects, and because the substances of the six faculties are pure without fault through that which is protected, they are jointly considered as one good topic. The statements on knowing moderation in food, constantly practicing wakefulness in the first and last watches of the night, associating with virtuous friends, and so forth, are as extensively explained there. The statement 'clearly and thoroughly knowing one's own transgressions and deeply seeing faults' corresponds to the fifth clause among the six clauses of the fourth provision there, which is 'seeing great peril in minute faults'.
