Among the nine in "bliss in both lives": the first three are bodily actions—not killing, not stealing, and not committing sexual misconduct; the fourth is not drinking liquor. According to the old treatise, it only says 'not drinking liquor of all kinds'; now it says 'all surā, etc.'—surā is rice wine. As for maireya, Jing and Ji both say: 'Medicinal wine.' Tai, Ce, and others say: 'It is wine made from the roots, stems, branches, and leaves of sugar cane and so forth.' Madhu is translated here as grape wine. Next, it says abandoning the four faults [of speech]. The last three mental roots are combined into one, bringing the total to nine when added to the preceding.
