"Pure beneficent practice has ten [aspects]: five based on the external, and five based on the internal. That is, what arises based on the external condition of sentient beings is called external purity; beneficent practice for sentient beings that arises based on having compassion within oneself is called internal purity. If following the Bodhisattvacaryānirdeśa, it says: the first five refer to the converted being free from faults, hence called external purity; because the merit of conversion returns to oneself, it is called internal pure land. The latter five take the four immeasurables as primary for benefiting others, hence called external; when converting, the converting mind is untainted, hence called internal. The Bodhisattvacaryānirdeśa is mistaken in not speaking of 'bodhisattvas toward sentient beings of mixed evil conduct.' If following the old treatise, there are only the first three, lacking the fourth clause on 'defiled conduct.'"
