Second, knowing the increase and decrease of the defilements and turbidities of the world. As for the nature of the five turbidities: 1. Turbidity of lifespan: the Mahāyāna provisionally posits the life-faculty upon the continuous sustainment of not dying by the ālayavijñāna, and it is precisely this life-faculty that is taken as the essence of the turbidity of lifespan. 2. Turbidity of sentient beings: the lower explanation says that not recognizing father and mother, or śramaṇas, takes lack of faith as its nature; if it is brāhmaṇas, it takes pride as its essence; not fearing sins in the present and future lives takes ignorance as its essence; not cultivating the good and so forth takes indolence as its essence; thus these five dharmas are taken as the essence of the turbidity of sentient beings.
