第三、舉果尋因以明次第，亦如涅槃經說：第一、依義，義即般若解脫法身，此是佛德是以先論；第二、依法不依人者，法是真如之理，果依理成故次辨之；第三、依智不依識，智是了因，由智顯如故次辨之；第四、依了義經不依不了者，由依了義經教漸修習故方成證理之智，故次辨之。

Third, the sequence of clarifying the order by presenting the fruition to trace the cause, also as the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: First, relying on the meaning—the meaning is prajñā, liberation, and the Dharmakāya; these are the virtues of a Buddha, and are therefore discussed first. Second, 'relying on the Dharma and not relying on the person'—the Dharma is the principle of tathatā; because the fruition is accomplished based on principle, it is explained next. Third, 'relying on gnosis and not relying on consciousness'—gnosis is the revealing cause (jñāpaka-hetu); because tathatā is made manifest by gnosis, it is explained next. Fourth, 'relying on definitive sūtras and not relying on non-definitive ones'—because it is by gradually cultivating based on the definitive scriptural teachings that the gnosis that realizes the principle is accomplished, it is explained next.
