本性義者，基云：即諸法本體，言識有八種，是識之本性，小乘不了義不說，故辨於本性亦不能了也。
Regarding 'essential nature meaning', Ji says: It is the intrinsic substance of all dharmas; stating that consciousness has eight kinds is the essential nature of consciousness. Since the Śrāvakayāna does not explain the definitive meaning, when it explains the essential nature it also cannot do so definitively.
