Next, the second part, explaining the meaning of joy, has four phrases: first, rejoicing because of realizing that which is not impure or destructible; second, rejoicing greatly because one's own embodiment conforms to the two kinds of functional activities—self-benefit and benefiting others—which are swiftly fulfilled. Regarding 'being far removed from much anger, malice, and contentious disputes', Tai says: 'Prior to the stages, one only abandons active manifestations, hence possessing a small portion; in the first stage, one abandons the seeds along with them, hence it says "a large portion"; but since one has only abandoned the afflictions of seeing and has not yet eliminated the afflictions of cultivation, it is not a complete removal.' Third, observing oneself that the wondrously wholesome is vast, free from outflows, and brings benefit, one rejoices in body and mind; fourth, also knowing for oneself that one is near to bodhi and free from the five fears, one rejoices greatly.
