Here, the vows all explain the causes and conditions for bringing forth Buddhahood, hence they all say 'in order to...', or the preliminary expedient means are called causes and conditions, while the actual initiation is called the fundamental vow. Regarding the ten vows: first, the vow of offering; second, the vow of receiving, upholding, and expounding; third, the vow of requesting the turning of the wheel of the Dharma, also called the vow of the eight aspects of attaining enlightenment; fourth, the vow of practice; fifth, the vow of maturing sentient beings; sixth, the vow of acting as the foremost in gathering dharmas; seventh, the vow of purifying the Buddha-land; eighth, the vow of shared mind and shared practice. Regarding 'always of one single taste with all bodhisattvas in intention and preparation': as the old treatise says, it means having the same expedient means as all bodhisattvas to transform [beings] through the Mahāyāna, which is called 'one single taste'. Ninth, the vow of the inexhaustibility of the three karmas; tenth, the vow of attaining bodhi.
