From "Now in this dwelling..." downwards is the fifth clause, explaining the complete subsumption of practice with preparation. As the Daśabhūmika Sūtra states: "A bodhisattva dwelling in the Stage of Far-Going is not called one with afflictions, nor called one without afflictions. Why? Because all afflictions do not function, they are not called one with afflictions; because their seeking of the Tathāgata's wisdom is not yet satisfied, they are not called one without afflictions." Jing says: The superior and middling grades of afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation were already subdued and non-functioning in the path of seeing, but for the sake of sentient beings, from the seventh stage backward they still arose, and lower-grade afflictions still manifested from time to time. Now it is said that foremost afflictions such as greed are all eliminated and cut off: this is based on the fact that during the seventh stage, when entering contemplation is frequent and emerging from contemplation to give rise to delusion occurs extremely rarely, taking the predominant aspect, it is said that greed and so forth are all eliminated and cut off. Ji says: In this dwelling, all greed and so forth are eliminated and cut off, which refers to the mind at the completion of the stage, not cutting off by the mind of the eighth stage; this, or as the Buddhabhūmiśāstra explains, should be distinguished accordingly. Below "Should know that this dwelling is not with afflictions," the explanation says: "Because all afflictions do not manifest," referring to the completion of the stage, as previously explained. Below "is not free from afflictions," the explanation says: "Because one seeks the Buddha's wisdom and has not yet attained it, and because there remains a grasping of a semblance-attachment to the Buddha's bodhi, one is not free from afflictions." Therefore, the concluding text below says: "Because practice with preparation is fulfilled."
