From "Such a practitioner..." downwards, the sixth [section] explains the purification of the three karmas: relying on the pure activities of resolute intention, worldly crafts and technical endeavors are all perfected. As to why the fulfillment of technical endeavors is specifically explained: in the seventh stage, technical endeavors are fulfilled because whenever crafts and technical endeavors are undertaken, effort is necessary to accomplish the deeds. From the initial aspiration, for the benefit of sentient beings, one studies all crafts and, relying on the seeking of wealth and material goods, intends to practice giving; it is only upon reaching the seventh stage that the crafts studied first attain wonderful completion, because in the seventh stage effort reaches its consummation and technical endeavors are brought to fulfillment. If praised by the Buddha, one practices them; if not praised, one does not, as explained in the fourth stage. In the fifth dwelling one had already acquired crafts, and now upon reaching the seventh stage, they become further perfected; therefore, throughout the three-thousandfold world system, one is universally acknowledged as a master. It omits mentioning 'excluding bodhisattvas of equal stage', because bodhisattvas of equal stage also do not take one another as masters. In the eighth stage, dhyānas and so forth spontaneously manifest without requiring preparation, like a dwelling in maturation; now in this stage, one is not yet able to act spontaneously, and because it is not yet like the dwelling in maturation of the eighth stage, it involves effort, so that dhyānas and so forth are then able to manifest before one, owing to the marks of cultivation manifesting before one. The Bodhisattvabhūmi is slightly different from this: there, all meditative stabilizations and factors of awakening are presently cultivated without experiencing karmic retribution.
