論云「於一切靜慮等菩提分法皆能現前，由修行相現在前故，非由安住異熟分位，如第八地」者，此中意，第八地中諸靜慮等，如異熟位，不須加行，任運現前。今此地中，未能任運如第八異熟住故，有功用故諸靜慮等方能現前，由修行相現在故。

The treatise says: "The dharmas conducive to awakening, such as all dhyānas, can all become manifest, because the marks of cultivation become manifest, not because of abiding in the state of maturation as in the eighth bhūmi." The meaning here is: in the eighth bhūmi, the dhyānas and so forth are like the state of maturation, requiring no application and becoming manifest spontaneously. Now in this bhūmi, one is not yet able to be spontaneous like the maturation-abode of the eighth [bhūmi]; because it involves effort, the dhyānas and so forth can only then become manifest, because the marks of cultivation are present.
