In the past, Master Huiyuan said: 'In brief, there are nine kinds of persons who obtain great merit: first, faith; second, understanding; third, delighting in hearing; fourth, upholding; fifth, cultivating and learning; sixth, copying and keeping; seventh, making offerings; eighth, venerating; ninth, taking it deeply and seriously. The merit of these nine persons is no different from the merit of expounding the ten stages for those who take delight in the practice of hearing among the bodhisattvas of the ten faiths in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra.' What merit do they have that makes them equal to them? As that sūtra states: 'Just as omniscience gathers all merits, the Chapter on the Gate to the Merits of Omniscience is also likewise. If a person hears it, their merit is also like this.' The intent of that text is to say that just as the Buddha stage gathers boundless merits, the merits of the Dharma-gate of the ten stages are equal to those of the Buddha; if someone hears it, their merit is equal to that of the stages, and thus is equal to that of the Buddha.
