Tai says: 'Discerning' means explaining that the ālayavijñāna is able to discern the aspect of the external vessel; that is, explaining the word 'discerning' within the passage. 'Relying upon cognizing the internal,' and so forth, means that one part of the ālayavijñāna has the function of taking internally appropriated seeds as object, and one part discerns the aspect of the external vessel world. With respect to the part [discerning] the external vessel world, the discerning ālayavijñāna relies on that consciousness's part which takes internal seeds as object and externally transforms into the aspect of the external vessel constantly and uninterruptedly. Thus, when the lamp flame arises, it illustrates that within the external vessel, which can discern; the oil is like the appropriated seeds; the wick illustrates the ālayavijñāna; the light illustrates the aspect of the external vessel. That is, this discerning of the external vessel relies upon those seeds and relies upon the ālaya to externally transform into the aspect of the vessel, without providing any further distinct explanation of what can discern.
