Regarding the ālayavijñāna serving as two conditions: First, it serves as seed, meaning that its ability to produce those evolving consciousnesses of the three natures is precisely the condition as cause (hetu-pratyaya), corresponding to the generative cause (utpātti-hetu) among the ten causes. Second, it serves as their support, which is the sovereign condition (adhipati-pratyaya), meaning that because the ālayavijñāna holds the five faculties, the five consciousnesses can arise; furthermore, because the ālayavijñāna arises, that manas serves as support, and thereby the mental consciousness is able to evolve, which precisely corresponds to the holding cause (parigraha-hetu) within the ten causes, because within the holding cause there are necessarily three conditions. Kuiji says: Because the eighth serves as object, the seeing portion of the seventh is able to arise; furthermore, because of the seeds in the eighth, the seventh is able to arise. Possessing these two meanings, this is therefore stated.
