The Tripiṭaka Master says: They pertain to seven stages—the four of the form realm and three of the formless realm. If so, why is it stated below in the context of the six direct realizations that they arise relying on three or relying on five? Therefore, one should know that the aids to penetration are bound to the five stages of the form realm; because the three preliminary preparations are aids to penetration, the contemplations such as the fivefold mental stabilization and so forth belong to the distracted mind and are thus bound to the desire realm, and hence they pertain to seven stages. Because the four roots of goodness—heat and the rest—exist only in the form realm, there is no contradiction with 'relying on three or relying on five.'
