The fifth major section clarifies the meaning of formations non-concurrent [with mind]. At the end of the second fascicle of the 'Mental Stage' in the Maulī Bhūmiḥ, it says: 'Briefly speaking, whether provisional or real, there are eighty-seven dharmas in the dharmadhātu: fifty-three mental factors; two kinds of form—form of discipline and non-discipline, and form arisen from samādhi; twenty-four non-concurrent formations, namely, attainment, the absorption without thought, and so forth; and eight unconditioned dharmas, namely, space and so forth.' Broadly there are eight, briefly six, and they are completely equal. Now, in this Viniścaya, there are only twenty-two non-concurrent formations, excluding non-concordance and direction. Later, awaiting their full presentation, the determination of the two absorptions is then clarified. Why are direction and non-concordance not mentioned? It is because direction is mostly discerned in terms of form, and non-concordance is discussed in terms of the dispersion of various conditions; since they are not distinct from the marks of form and mind, they are omitted in this brief account.
