From "yet those great elements having such a gotra arise in such an equal manner" downward: it clarifies that when this barley and grain subsequently produce stalks and fruits through the conditioning force of water and earth, they are neither identical nor different. This simile corresponds broadly to the preceding teaching: that the seeds of the fruit, such as stalks, with barley serving as the condition, produce subsequent shoots and so forth, which are called seeds; one should know that the characteristics of phenomena are also like this. This arose because of an objection from another school: 'Regarding the preceding conditioned provisional dharmas, they do not require seeds to arise; in the preceding causes and conditions, it was said that the eighth consciousness is the cause and condition; how are these seeds [explained]?' Therefore this passage exists. Were it not so, this would combine separate meanings; only after answering 'how are such unassociated dharmas, cessation absorption, and so forth explained?' does it conclude the preceding text.
