In the intrinsic nature of formations, it says: 'causing the mind to act through five kinds'—these are all functions of volition. First, regarding 'conforming to and providing the object': Jing says: This means that toward objects of harmony, conflict, and so forth, volition conforms to these objects and operates together with consciousness. Bei says: This means that volition is able to initiate the mind so that objects conform to and turn with the mind; it speaks of this as other objects conforming to and being provided to the mind. Tai says: This means that volition causes the mind, toward the cognized object, to conform to and provide apprehension of harmony or conflict. Ji says: Because volition causes the mind, toward the cognized object, to conform to and provide apprehension, there is no need to speak of harmony, etc.; this first is an overarching phrase. If one speaks of harmony, etc., how does it differ from the second and subsequent ones? Second, causing the mind to meet with what is agreeable; third, to separate from what is contrary in the object; fourth, to initiate karmas with taints; fifth, to bring mastery to the mind-king.
