Under 'entities' (vastu), there are seven gates of analysis. First, explaining the quantity [of entities] in the same locus. Question: When it says, 'As for the eye in the form aggregate, by how many entities is it subsumed?', 'entity' refers to substantial actualities. The intent of the question is: like the eye faculty, among the eighteen realms, by how many realms is it subsumed? Answer: When it says, 'If according to individual characteristics, it is subsumed under only one entity, etc.', if explained by its own characteristic, it subsumes only the intrinsic nature of the eye faculty, meaning the basis of the eye consciousness, identifying the cause by naming the result. When it says, 'If according to inseparable subsumption, there are seven entities, etc.', this is based on inseparability in the same locus. The Supplementary Commentator says: In general, explaining inseparability has three [modes]: First is inseparability in the same locus. That is, from past karma the eye faculty is obtained; at the stage of the intermediate state (antarābhava) or rebirth-existence when the eye faculty is about to arise, the earth great element arises first and occupies its locus, and then at the time within the faculties, the eye faculty first arises—at the same time and in the same locus; subsequently there are the body faculty, the earth great element, and the four [tangible] dusts that support the faculty. These seven entities blend into a single substance, mutually penetrating throughout. It is like the light of many lamps burning in a single room: their substances mutually penetrate throughout, and one cannot say 'it is here' or 'it is there'. It is also like when fruits such as peaches arise: according to their size, their substance is merely one, and one cannot say that an accumulation of minute atoms forms them. This is called inseparability in the same locus. The dharmas capable of this inseparability of the seven entities in the same locus must be of the same nature: karmic retribution with karmic retribution, and nourishment with nourishment. If karmic retribution and nourishment are compared as different natures, that is subsumed under inseparability by mixture. An accumulation of grains, barley, and the like is called inseparability by aggregation.
