Fourth, explaining that in the form realm there are no two dusts [smell and taste] and no two consciousnesses. Ji says: For what purpose are these faculties used? The meaning is: as in the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra, it is for the purpose of adorning the body. It is objected: If it is to adorn the body, the supporting dusts of the faculties would suffice; what need is there for the faculties? The answer: To utter spoken sounds, one must rely on the supporting dusts; if there are the dependent eye faculties, the dusts that are their supports only then serve as the basis to utter speech, and otherwise it is not possible; hence the faculties are necessary. Up to: just as without the sensory realm of the faculties, there are also no bases for them; if the two faculties are absent, their bases are also absent, and other such objections should be deduced in reverse.
