Jing says: This text directly refutes the view of the Sthaviravādin, who say that past and future phenomena do not exist and only the present exists, among which there are only three phenomena: first, form; second, mind; third, mental factors. When mind and mental factors arise, they are rapid, enduring in the present for two moments, namely arising and cessation: when the previous mind arises and reaches the characteristic of cessation, the subsequent mind has already reached arising; when a third mind arises and reaches the characteristic of arising, that second mind has already reached the characteristic of cessation. Material phenomena are sluggish, and therefore in the present they endure for three moments, namely arising, abiding, and cessation. Now this doctrine is refuted.
