Question: Just as when an arrow is shot into the air, when it goes forward effort is applied and one may say there is a cause; when it falls without effort being applied, what is its cause? They then resolve it by saying: When the arrow travels, it is obstructed by a shield or the like and immediately falls; even if there is no object obstructing it, the effort applied when shooting is precisely the cause of falling; if one had not shot originally, by what reason would it now fall? By this principle, both the arising and cessation of phenomena all have causes. Therefore, now citing that Abhidharma doctrine to refute it directly: it should not be said that the cause of arising is precisely the cause of cessation, because their characteristics are different. Since arising and cessation are distinct, how could the cause be one?
