First, produced by external conditions: meaning, through enjoying and appropriating, excessive non-sentient favorable objects benefit the five faculties; injuring external objects means excessive non-sentient adverse objects damage the five faculties. Or through benefit and injury produced by other classes: these effects are, first, sentient beings' adverse and favorable objects benefit or injure the five faculties; second, produced by internal conditions, entanglements such as greed injure the five faculties, or meditative attainment nourishes the five faculties; third, through karmic force causing those five faculties to transform halfway, good first and bad later, and so forth; fourth, through transformation of own-substance, meaning retribution and nourishment of those faculties are mutually strong or weak, having distinct individual characteristics. By four causes and conditions, after the six consciousnesses arise, all are called the mental faculty; now here, impaired mental faculty is distinguished with respect to mental consciousness, and its opposite is unimpaired.
