Ji says: The first single aspect counteracts the first one, meaning suffering removes [the clinging to] pleasure in physical form; impermanence counteracts two, meaning the assumptions that the body is pure and that the mind is permanent; the last two aspects counteract one, meaning emptiness and non-self counteract the assumption of self. Alternatively, the first aspect of impermanence counteracts the permanence of mind, while suffering counteracts bodily pleasure, purity, and the inversion of feeling pleasure. The rest is the same as above. This differs from the order of the four inversions in the preceding fascicle. Why does the aspect of suffering counteract two? Because non-Buddhists grasp view-attachment and precept-attachment as causes of excellence and purity, and conceive craving toward them; in the preceding eighth fascicle, both of these are cravings, and in order to eliminate them, the single aspect of suffering is combined to eliminate [the inversions of] pleasure and purity, which correspond to the attachments to views and precepts.
