Regarding "if it has already been established, it can manifest in all places": if one relies on the provisional conforming teaching where the ālayavijñāna is not established, a non-returner (anāgāmin) who has previously in the desire realm severed the defilements of the third dhyāna and suppressed all defilements from the fourth concentration and above is able to enter the absorption of cessation; later, regressing from the absorption of cessation and being born in the form realm, he re-arouses the absorption of cessation; fearing annihilation, he must rely on a physical body before entering concentration, and therefore in the formless realm he does not arouse the absorption of cessation. But if one relies on the true principle and the doctrine that establishes the ālayavijñāna, it is said that although one born in the formless realm lacks a physical body and ceases the six consciousnesses, relying on the ālayavijñāna he can also arouse the absorption of cessation; hence it can manifest in all places across the three realms. Another explanation: relying on the Prajñāpāramitā, etc., which do not establish the ālayavijñāna teaching, one can only arouse the absorption of cessation relying on the physical body; if relying on the Saṃdhinirmocana, etc., which establish the ālayavijñāna teaching, being born in the formless realm one can arouse the absorption of cessation.
