下例句文中云「謂標句、釋句,音所攝、字所攝」者,句有二種,謂總標、別釋句。字有二種,謂本音十四音,即𧙃阿等;字謂四十四字,即迦佉伽等。此二皆依彼言說分位句身等,故言亦爾。又音所攝,即闡陀論,有男女等二種音,各有七轉聲成音。文字所攝,即謂言音字。
Below, in the text drawing the analogy of sentences (pada), it says: "Namely, topic-phrases and explanatory phrases, subsumed under vowels (svara) and subsumed under phonemes/letters (akṣara)." Sentences are of two kinds: general topic-phrases and distinct explanatory phrases. Characters are of two kinds: the primary sounds (fourteen vowels), namely a, ā, etc.; and consonants/letters (forty-four letters), namely ka, kha, ga, etc. Both of these are based on the stages of verbal expression as phrase-sets (padakāya), etc., hence it is also spoken of in this way. Furthermore, "subsumed under vowels" refers to the Chandas treatises, which have two kinds of sounds, masculine and feminine, each having seven case endings (vibhakti) to form words. "Subsumed under written characters" refers to spoken phonemes and written letters.
