Ji says: regarding the earlier claim that the states of mind establish feeling, perception, and formations, the distinct causes and conditions for the states of mind cannot be found; just as when a mind arises taking a desirable object as condition, the very initial moment should give rise to greed, and so on at all times as long as it has not departed from this object; why then is the initial moment called consciousness, the second moment called feeling, and the third called perception? Because there are no distinct causes and conditions. If there are no mental factors, within a single moment of mind there are no distinct causes and conditions.
