二明假實，或十七、或十二等者，景云：若十七為實，意界是假，離六識了別之外無別意界故。若十二為實，則六識是假，以離生後意界之外無別六識故，體但是一。今約世俗安立道理，故說六為一一為六等。基云：十七者，除意界。

Second, explaining nominal and real: “either seventeen, or twelve, etc.” Jing said: If seventeen are real, the mind-element is nominal, because apart from the apprehension of the six consciousnesses there is no separate mind-element. If twelve are real, then the six consciousnesses are nominal, because apart from the mind-element that generates the subsequent, there are no separate six consciousnesses, their entity being merely one. Now, according to the principle of conventional designation, it therefore speaks of the six as one, and the one as six, etc. Ji said: “Seventeen” excludes the mind-element.
