Under the section on distinctions, Jing says: Arousing defilements in one's prime is called the state of distraction; or the various entanglements of the desire realm may be called the state of distraction. Afflictions of breaking precepts are called afflictions in the state of admonition and repentance. Afflictions aroused upon reaching old age or illness are called afflictions in the state of emaciation and debility. Afflictions in the meditative stages are called the state of suppression; or afflictions that regress and arise after having been suppressed, or abandoning the defilements of a lower stage to give rise to the defilements of a higher stage, are called afflictions in the state of separation from bonds.
