16. The section on inverted and non-inverted: Jing says: The six faculties that have the meaning of inversion refer to the five feelings and the mind; generating defilement toward objects is called the meaning of inversion. The meaning of those objective realms is suffering and impurity; generating greed where one should not have greed, generating anger where one should not have anger, and so forth, is called the meaning of inversion. The seven physical faculties serve as the supporting basis for inversion; if the five feelings and the mind faculty are defiled, they are inverted, and since they can also be indeterminate and non-inverted, they are called 'small portions of the six.' When the seven physical faculties generate afflictions, they are forcibly called inverted; but defilement relying on the five feelings and mind faculty is inversion, while when pure by nature they are non-inverted; hence it says 'small portions of the six.'
